Condition
The panel is uncradled, flat, stable and appears to be formed of a single plank. The paint surface is slightly dirty and varnish is discoloured. There is a faint surface vertical scratch to the left of her nose, approx 2cm long, and a faint crack is visible, starting from the centre of the upper margin approx 4.5cm long. There are some small discoloured retouchings visible, most notably in her clothing. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a streaky varnish which fluoresces opaque, underneath which it is possible to discern the aforementioned retouchings as well as further spots scattered in her flesh tones and hair (most notably beneath her chin), and a more concentrated area in the lower left corner. In overall good condition offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wooden frame, with some losses.

Catalogue Note
Amalia von Solms-Braunfels (1602–75), was a lady-in-waiting to Elizabeth of Bohemia, the 'Winter Queen' and sister of King Charles I of England, before she herself married Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584–1647) in 1625. It has been suggested that this portrait may depict the Princess Consort dressed for a masque. William, 1st Earl of Craven (1608–97) was an ardent admirer and supporter of Elizabeth of Bohemia, and possessed numerous portraits of Elizabeth, her family and her entourage. In the foreword of the 1866 catalogue of the Craven collection, it is written that the property listed, including the present portrait 'has been in the possession of the Craven Family from 1616 to the present time'.
