Description
- Cremonese School, 16th century
- A kitchen scene
- oil on beechwood panel, unframed
- 45 x 29 cm.; 17 3/4 x 11 3/8 in.
Condition
The panel is uncradled, made up of a single plank, is bevelled on all four edges, and is flat and stable. There is evidence of an old horizontal baton along the upper edge, most likely to secure the upper right corner, which is coming loose but secured by some nails. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is discoloured and uneven. There is a small panel loss halfway down the right edge, as well as worm holes scattered mainly in the lower quarter of the composition. There are two vertical splits in the panel in the left third of the composition, one starting from the upper edge approx. 8cm. long and one from the bottom edge approx. 5cm. long. There are further surface cracks in the upper centre, two of which are in the female sitter's face. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, milky varnish underneath which retouchings are visible along the aforementioned cracks, as well as small spots scattered throughout, but it is difficult to discern much else. In overall fair condition.
