Condition
The painting is constructed from three panels, joined horizontally. There is a split in the lower panel join, from lower right, running about half way into the painting and a split in the upper panel join, also running from the right, about two inches into the picture. The painting has a very dirty, uneven and discoloured varnish overall, which has blanched and is currently obscuring much of the finer detail of the picture. Examination under ultraviolet light is made difficult by the opacity of the varnish, however there is an old spot of retouching to a small paint loss above the angel's head, but otherwise no apparent signs of significant restoration or retouching the painting is held in a gilt wood frame in reasonable condition.
