Description

  • Flemish School, 17th century
  • A landscape with peasants havesting, a river meandering beyond
  • oil on canvas
  • 62.8 x 100.4 cm.; 24 3/4  x 39 1/2  in.

Condition

The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured and uneven. There are small discoloured retouchings throughout, particularly visible in the sky. There are also a handful of scattered pinprick losses scattered through the landscape, and a small L-shaped scratch in the lower right corner. There is some evidence of wear visible in the darker areas of the painting. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the retouchings in the sky and scattered through the foreground and foliage; the most significant of these are an area in the sky, upper centre, around 3 by 8 cm., and a larger area of retouching in the leaves on the left side of the right-hand tree, measuring approx. 6 by 6 cm. In overall fair condition.
