Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is discoloured and uneven. A vertical seam which runs the height of the canvas is visible in the centre of the composition under raking light, and has some associated retouching. Retouchings are also visible in the sails of the ships, in the upper corners, and scattered in the sky and sea. There is some paint lifting and a small spot of paint loss along the lower left edge. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of retouching. The older campaign is most notable in the aforementioned areas. The more recent campaign is most notable in fine lines of strengthenings to the main ships and the small boats and figures in the foreground. In overall good condition for a canvas of this size. Offered in a plain, parcel gilt frame in good condition.
