Description

  • Portrait of Íñigo Melchor de Velasco, 7th Duke of Frías (1635-1696)
  • extensively inscribed along the lower margin with the identity of the sitter
  • oil on canvas
  • 150.5 x 111 cm.; 59 1/4  x 43 3/4  in.

Condition

The canvas appears to be unlined - there is some buckling of the canvas at the far left margin but otherwise paint surface is stable. The varnish even but slightly discoloured. There are no major damages visible to naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals very minor retouchings scattered throughout - only one restoration to a 3 inch vertical tear in the centre of the sitters sash at his waist, barely visible to the naked eye. It seems likely that there are further strengthenings in the dark background at the very left. In overall very good condition. Offered in a wood frame in good condition.
