The painting is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is discoloured. The canvas shows evidence of slight wear. There are spots of paint loss scattered mainly in the lower half of the composition as a result of lifted craquelure, most notably in the lower right corner. The paint surface in the hourglass is slightly unstable. There is a thick horizontal line of retouching approx. 15cm. from the left edge, probably as a result of a seam in the canvas. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, milky varnish underneath which it is difficult to discern much, but some retouchings appear scattered throughout, most notably along the aforementioned craquelure in the lower half of the composition. In overall fair condition. Offered in a plain gilt frame with minor losses.
