The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The canvas shows evidence of wear throughout. There are visible retouchings, most notably in the sitter's nose, cheeks and jaw, in the chair and table cloth below his hands, in the lower right quadrant, in the gold cloth within the chair frame, in the bird's left wing, and in the background circa 15cm. above the open book. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as further retouchings along the left, upper and right edges, in his cloak, in the sky, and in the paper on his desk. In overall fair condition. Offered in a plain gilt frame with some losses.
