Description
- Roman School, 18th Century
- The infant Bacchus; Bacchus in old age
- a pair, both oil on canvas, unlined
- each: 93 x 76 cm.; 36 5/8 x 29 7/8 in.
Provenance
With Walter Kathrein, Innsbruck;
From whom acquired by the present owner circa 1968.
From whom acquired by the present owner circa 1968.
Condition
The reverse of both canvasses have been painted with a glue or varnish - giving the effect of a lining - both canvasses are very firm.
The varnish on the front appears to be old and rather uneven. There are multiple losses scattered throughout both canvasses - all a result of old flaking, now stable. Along with the remnants of some old varnish, there is repaint along the edges under the frame presumably to minimalist the effect of some frame abrasion, and some wear in the darker tones. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals very little old restoration - the varnish fluoresces opaque. There are some more recent retouchings visible scattered throughout both, including two larger areas at the upper margin of the canvas depicting Bacchus in his youth - it might also be assumed that there are also some retouchings beneath the thick varnish, but seemingly not a lot.
Both pictures are offered in matching carved and gilt wood frames with signed of old worm damage but in overall fair condition.
