Thence by inheritance.
Exhibited
On loan to Abbot Hall Gallery, Kendal, since 1963.
Condition
The canvas has been lined, the paint surface is rather dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is some thinning and visible retouching in the sky, upper left, and just above the horse. There is also a small retouching in the ground below the horse's raised hind hoof. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old, milky varnish, but reveals these aforementioned retouchings, as well fine retouching to disguise some of the network of craquelure on the right-hand side of the painting. In overall good condition.
