Provenance

Anonymous sale, Munich, Hampel Fine Art Auctions, 4 December 2009, lot 469.

Condition

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. In raking light, an area of retouching is visible around the top of the man's head, right, measuring approx. 5 x 15 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching throughout the work, largely consisting of fine lines to disguise the appearance of craquelure. There are rather more concentrated areas of retouching in the figures' flesh tones, and spot retouchings scattered in the architecture and landscape. These have all been sensitively-executed. In overall good condition, without a need for further intervention.
