Description
- Jacob Toorenvliet
- Portrait of an old man
- signed with initials upper left: JT
- oil on copper
- 13 x 10.2 cm.; 5 1/8 x 4 in.
Condition
The copper plate is stable, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is very slightly discoloured. A small, circular water mark is visible to the right of the man's face. There is a horizontal line measuring circa 0.5 cm. where the paint has lifted along the right third of the lower edge possibly from old framing, as well as a small spot of retouching above the man's proper right shoulder. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a milky varnish underneath which this is visible, as well as further associated retouching upper right possibly as a result of an old scuff. There are further tiny spots of retouching scattered throughout, most notably in his nose, and one to the right of his proper left eye. In overall very good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
