Condition
The canvas is laid onto an old panel with supporting blocks adhered to the reverse along a horizontal line 17 in. from the upper margin. There are some small losses and old damages and patches of wear throughout - especially in the hair of the sitter; around his jawline; in the background to the right of his head. Inspection under UV light reveals little by the way of retouching but the painting has had a 'selective' clean - the varnish has been cleaned off over the face and shoulder of the sitter, and the right section of background. Old varnish remains in place in the other parts.
Offered in a gilt wood frame in fair condition.
