The canvas is lined, the paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The paint surface has become rather sunk in many areas of the canvas, resulting in a rather uneven surface. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a rather thick, milky varnish, but there are small areas of more recent retouching visible in the tree, left, scattered in the sky, and very few in the foreground, centre.
