Description
- The Master of the Twelve Apostles
- The Tiburtine Sibyl showing the Virgin and Child to Emperor Augustus
- oil on poplar panel
- 47 x 30.1 cm.; 18 1/2 x 11 7/8 in.
Condition
The panel is uncradled, made up of a single plank, and is flat and stable. There is evidence of old cradling with two horizontal batons on the upper and lower margins on the reverse. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is a horizontal split in the panel lower left approx. 10cm. long. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fine lines of retouching to reduce the appearance of craquelure scattered in the centre and upper centre of the composition. Further retouchings appear scattered along the upper left edge, in the sibyl's arms, chin and headdress, and in the Emperor's arms and clothing, but the painting appears in otherwise very good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
