When Apollo 12 crew Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Al Bean launched on 14 November 1969, they were carrying over 70 items of sustenance ranging from rehydratable freeze-dried items, to wet-pack and spoon-bowl foods and ready-to-eat meals. As with the preceding missions, the food on Apollo 12 was organized into three meals totaling 2,200 calories a day per astronaut, and went through a four-day cycle. The food was prepared and packaged by the Whirlpool Corporation in conjunction with the U.S. Army Laboratory in Natick, Massachusetts. Preparation methods ranged, but the wet-pack examples — as with the Beef Pot Roast at hand — required the astronauts to inject water into the bag, and knead it throughout the dehydrated substance before it was cut open and consumed.
