Catalogue Note
A WONDERFUL EARLY ITEM FROM THE FIRST AMERICAN TO TRAVEL INTO SPACE, AND THE FIFTH PERSON TO WALK ON THE MOON. Shepard was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he would have taken this course, and became a naval aviator a year later. He was selected as one of the original NASA Mercury 7 astronauts in 1956, and became the first American in space in May of 1961.
