Condition

In overall good condition with some surface dirt, notably in the crevices, and a few minor chips along the edges of the base, the chair and on the high points of the drapery. The child's proper right foreleg may have been reattached and his toes retouched. The toes on his proper left foot may have been retouched as well with small chips visible. The two detached buttons, on the proper left side of the upholstered seat could be easily reattached. Very good quality modelling, very detailed and fresh.

Catalogue Note

Brother of the painter Jules Chéret (1836-1932), Joseph was one of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) main assistants. Since 1863, he used to exhibit in the Salon des artistes français. In addition, he collaborated with famous craftsmen such as Christofle in Paris or Pallemberg in Vienna. He exhibited in the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts of which he became a member in 1894.
