Condition
The first: The actual painting is less saturated than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The red of the boat of the right is softer. To the naked eye: The painting is in overall satisfactory condition. It has been relined a little too strong and has flattened the pictorial matter. The painting seems to have some wears scattered throughout, revealing the canvas. Under the boat located under the tower, we can see a vertical retouching of ca. 3 cm. The varnish layer seems to be clear. Some retouching are discoloured in the sky and in the centre left. Under U.V. light: The retouching under the boat (mentioned above) can be also seen under UV light. Another retouching can be seen above the buildings of the left. A horizontal retouching of ca. 23 cm is located 5 cm from the upper edge hiding probably a paint loss. Sold with a giltwood frame (well preserved). The second: To the naked eye: The painting appears to be in a moderately satisfactory condition. It has several wears and the canvas weave is visible. The painting has been relined a bit too strong and has flattened the pictorial matter. A paint loss is visible on the left corner, next to the anchor. Paint losses are scattered all over. Under the U.V. light: We can see several horizontal repaints and one semi-circular located in the sky in the left part (visible on the catalogue illustration and on the back of the frame). There is a bigger restoration located in the middle of the sky and another one on the lower right corner. Sold with a giltwood frame (some chips).
