Condition

In overall good condition with minor surface dirt notably in the crevices and chips along the edges of the base and to the high points. There is a larger loss to the back of the base with vertical fissures along the pillar with a small loss to the lower left angle. There are some inclusion and natural grey veining at several places. The surface appears to be slightly eroded notably Apollo's nose.

Catalogue Note

The feminine delicacy of the figure's features and the exaggerated contraposto of the body with elongated thin legs are typical of North Italian artists during the first half of the 18th century. The marbles Apollo and Bacchus by Francesco Bertos (1678-1741) present a comparable physiognomy (current locations unknown, H. 15 7/8  in).
