The brooch set with three nicolo intaglios of putti chasing butterflies within decorative gold frames, embellished with seed pearl tassels, with French import mark; the necklace composed of a textured gold chain suspending a similarly-set pendant with three nicolo intaglios of putti playing musical instruments framed by seed pearls, further suspending two textured gold drops terminating on lapis lazuli and bloodstone chalcedony intaglios, length 15 inches; circa last quarter 19th century.
Condition
In good condition, especially given the age of this piece. The seed pearl tassels may benefit from being restrung. French import mark for 18 karat gold. A nicolo intaglio is agate cut to leave a thin layer of faint whitish blue/grey over a thicker dark layer. The intaglios all in very good condition, the largest measuring approximately 19.1 x 14.6 x 4.1 mm (pendant), the smallest measuring approximately 10.1 x 7.9 x 1.5 mm (brooch). The seed pearls measuring from approximately 4.7 to 1.9 mm, are of cream body color, with good skin and overall fair luster. The lapis lazuli intaglio engraved with a crown above the initials RM. The bloodstone chalcedony intaglio engraved with a crown. Chain length 15 inches. Pendant length approximately 6½ inches. Brooch length approximately 3⅜ inch, width 2½ inches. Total gross weight approximately 58 dwts.
