Condition
Overall in very good condition. There are natural knots, irregularities and separations in the wood grain, typical for Inland fir, and this has been reinforced with wood infill in areas by Molesworth at the time of production. The wood surfaces with scattered scuffs, scratches, dents, abrasions, and minor areas of rubbing, not visually distracting and consistent with age and use. The rear upper edge of both vertical back supports with areas of pronounced abrasions, the larger on the proper left side measuring approximately ½ x 1 5/8 in. The proper right vertical support with a slightly deeper scratch (approximately ¾ x ½ in) and a minor loss. The front proper left leg with some loss to the period wood infill measuring approximately 3 in. The front stretcher with a small abrasion measuring approximately ¼ x 5/8 in.
Both the seat and back cushions are reversible, with Chimayo wool weaving on one side and leather on the other. The wool presents with a more maroon, cherry-red color than illustrated in the catalogue and this distinguishes its tonality and texture from that of the leather. The wool is all original and in good, clean condition. The seat cushion with a small area of the underweaving exposed to the center of the front wool edge, measuring approximately 1 ½ in. The back cushion with minor fading to the wool along the top edge, likely from sun exposure. The leather surfaces with very minor scattered scuffs and rubbing, not visually distracting and consistent with age and gentle use. With the fabric side facing outwards, the inside of the proper right leather cushion strap with some separation at the seams measuring approximately 2 in., not immediately visible when the cushion is strapped onto the chair, but could benefit from stabilization. The brass tacks with some minor surface scratches and areas of rubbing, not visually distracting and consistent with age and gentle use. A highly comfortable chair that is popular within the overall oeuvre of Molesworth, the pieces presents very well overall.
