Catalogue Note

Beaufort, the celebrated hydrographer, was sent by the Admiralty on this coastal survey of the south coast of Turkey (the first of the area) which was brought to an end by a Turkish attack in 1812 during which Beaufort was badly wounded. He identified 60 sites on the coast with ancient cities and this narrative spawned several archaeological expeditions for further exploration in Asia Minor purely on the strength of his descriptions.
