Catalogue Note

"THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE SURVIVING EARLY MAP-VIEWS OF LONDON" (Howgego). The present example is from the second state of the plate, issued two years after the first, by Braun and Hogenberg as part of their atlas of city views called Civitates Orbis Terrarum. This six volume work was issued between 1572 and 1617 and contained more than 500 city plans. The map of London was updated in 1574 with 'Westmester' changed to 'Westmuster' and with the addition of the newly built Royal Exchange. The map was drawn at least 15 years prior to publication, since it shows the spire of St Paul's, which was destroyed by lightning in 1561 and not reconstructed.
