Catalogue Note
VERY RARE. A good copy with wide margins, comprising a 10-part panorama of Constantinople (sheets 1-10), plan of Constantinople (11), a collection of 13 views and descriptions (12-22), a double-page plate of camels and their harnesses (23), and a view and 15 plates of Levantine costume (24-31). Gudenus (1710-1783), was a member of the Austrian embassy to the court of Sultan Mahmud I. The panorama shows a complete 360o view of the city based on Gudenus's drawings made from the roof of the Swedish embassy in Pera between February 14 and May 4, 1741 (see Hartmuth). Another (later?) version of the panorama was engraved by P. Duret in Paris and issued in two parts (each of three sheets), both of which are illustrated in the Atabey catalogue (pp. 282-283, no. 533).
