Condition
Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Proper left side has been broken and put back in place with string. Remains visible of resin for decoration on the face, mixed with human hair in the eyebrows. Kaolin remnants in places, as visible in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note
Identifiable par son labret à un masque féminin cette œuvre témoigne du rare corpus des créations Makonde. Intervenant lors de la clôture des cérémonies d’initiation, ces masques incarnent l’esprit des ancêtres et rappellent aux jeunes initiés leur position dans la communauté ainsi que les droits et les devoirs qui leur incombent. La puissance expressionniste de ce masque, amplifiée par la qualité de sa polychromie, l’apparente très étroitement au masque conservé à L’ethnologisches Museum de Berlin, rentré dans les collections avant 1937 (inv. III E 17818) et à celui maintes fois exposé au Musée Dapper (Falgayrettes-Leveau, Corps sublimes, 1994, p. 165).
