Veau havane glacé, décor à la cathédrale, encadrement de grecques poussées à froid et filet doré gras, dos à nerfs orné, pièces de titre en veau noir, tranches marbrées (Reliure anglaise de l'époque). Étuis.Reports. Charnières fendues ou restaurées. Dans une reliure néo-gothique anglaise de l'époque. Magnifiques aquatintes coloriées à la main : 70 vues d'Oxford sur 64 planches par Stadler, Havell et d’autres d’après Pugin, Mackenzie, Nash et Westall, etc., gravées par Bluck, Stadler, Hill, etc., et 17 planches des costumes de professeurs et d'élèves par Agar d'après Unwins. Portrait en noir de Lord Grenville. Sans les portraits des fondateurs, optionnels à l'achat. Liste des souscripteurs (6 p.). Première édition, un des premiers exemplaires, avec le filigrane "1812" dans les planches et premier état de la liste des planches (sans celles des fondateurs). Ackermann se rendit célèbre comme éditeur de livres à planches en couleurs de grande qualité avec l'édition du Microcosm of London (1808-1810), qui contenait 104 grandes aquatintes de format in-folio coloriées à la main. "These two books [avec History of Cambridge, 1815] are among the finest ever executed. A. Pugin, F. Nach, F. Mackenzie, and W. Westall were associated in the drawings, which are worthy even of the splendid architectural monuments they commemorate, while the engraving was carried out by such masters of aquatint as J. Bluck, J.C. Stadler, F.C. Lewis, D. Havell and others of like reputation. The result was the production of plates of unequalled merit in their particular line" (Prideaux, p. 125-126).
