the compressed globular body resting on three cabriole feet, rising to a straight neck and a thick lipped rim, the shoulders flanked by two upright handles sweeping outward and pierced with rectangular apertures, enameled allover with a stylized floral scroll interspersed with the 'Eight Buddhist Emblems' against a bluish-celadon ground, a band of ruyi heads below the neck, a band of keyfret accentuating the rim and handles, a recessed double circle painted with pink enamel and puce floral scrolls on the underside, a six-character seal mark in iron-red within a rectangular cartouche at the rim

Provenance

Sotheby's London, 12th December 1989, lot 439.

Condition

The body is in generally good condition with only minor expected wear, however, one handle is broken and re--stuck at the upper curve, and the other handle is re-stuck at its base and has extensive overspray allover (possibly concealing additional condition issues along the handle).

Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Catalogue Note

It is rare to find a censer of this type and decoration on a celadon ground. For related examples of similar size but with different colored grounds, see one with a white ground sold in these rooms, 24th November 1981, lot 299; a yellow-ground example sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 28th April 1992, lot 188, and a pink-ground version recently sold at Christie's London, 15th May 2018, lot 262.  For a Qianlong period celadon-ground tripod censer decorated with iron-red blossoms amidst stylized floral sprays, see one sold in our London rooms, 13th July 2005, lot 266. See also a Jiaqing seal mark and period celadon-ground example similarly decorated in famille-rose enamels with the 'Eight Buddhist Emblems', sold at Christie's South Kensington, 12th May 2017, lot 391.
