- Height 5 in., 12.8 cm
cast in relief with the two deities seated before flame mandorlas, the reverse with a large Buddha seated before a mandorla, the hands in dharmachakra mudra, the four-legged support incised with a rope-twist border and large flowers, inscribed with an indistinct dedication, wood stand, Japanese wood box (4)

Japanese Private Collection, acquired 1950s (by repute).
Condition
The votive is in stable condition with only minor nicks and dents to the surface, and losses to the gilt (all as illustrated). There are minor manufacturing imperfections and the bronze has oxidized to black and olive-green tones.

Compare a similar stele, dated to the 21st year of the Taihe period, corresponding to 497, illustrated in Saburo Matsubara, Chinese Buddhist Sculpture: A study based on bronze and stone statues other than works from cave temples, Tokyo, 1966, pls 43b, c. Compare another example, dated to the 20th year of the Taihe period, corresponding to 497, of the same subject matter and with the same rope-twist border to the base, however lacking the large blossoms, sold in these rooms, 5th June, 1973, lot 272.
