Description

  • Height 3 7/8  in., 9.8 cm
of cylindrical form, the waist with a slight bulge carved with a pair of archaistic taotie masks, all between incised stiff plantain leaves extending from the slightly flared rim and foot, the base inset with a circular plate, the stone with a warm yellow tinge, wood and textile stand (3)

Gifted to The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, in 1966 (acc. no. 1966.449a-b).

Condition

The vase is in mostly good condition, but there is a chip to the underside of the inset base, and minute nicks and scratches to the surface throughout. The color of the stone is slightly more yellowish-green than in the illustration in the printed catalog.
