Description

  • Height of figure 21 1/2  in., 54.6 cm
the Historical Buddha well cast seated in vajraparyankasana, the hands in bhumisparsha mudra, the head covered in neat spiraled hair bosses surrounding the cranial bump, the face with gently arched brows above half-closed bowed lids, the straight nose and small mouth, the kasaya and antaravasaka garments with lotus-patterned borders cast in relief and draped about the body and legs, with traces of gilt lacquer, all raised on a lotus flower base comprised of three tiers of naturalistic petals, further raised on a foot of stylized lotus petals (2)

Purchased from the above in the late 1930s, and thence by descent.  

Condition

In overall good condition with minor casting flaws including scattered small gaps in the casting. A few traces of blue pigment and gilding to the hair. When placed on the lotus base, one can see into the cavity of the base as there is a small gap between where the figure sits and the cavity edge. The lip of the base interior collapsed slightly during the casting or was later compressed. There are minor signs of oxidation to the surface. There is wear and pitting to the surface.

This impressive bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni in the earth-touching gesture. Bhumisparsha mudra, recalls the moment of his enlightenment, in which he called upon the earth as his witness of his battle against the temptations and attacks of Mara and his demons.
