Catalogue Note

Commonly referred to as the ‘Medicine Buddha’, the deity is worshipped as a healer who can relieve suffering through his teachings. The famous Chinese Buddhist monk, Xuanzang, visited a monastery at Bamiyan, Afghanistan in the 7th century, a site that has since been excavated by archaeologists who discovered remnants of a scroll containing the Bhaisajyaguru Sutra, attesting to the enduring popularity of this manifestation of Buddha with healing powers.
