Catalogue Note
Rolex introduced their first self winding chronograph wristwatch in 1988. The movement in this new Daytona was significantly modified, but ultimately based on the on the Zenith El Primero calibre, originally released in the late 60s. Rolex made over 200 alterations to this base movement to create their Calibre 4030. Of course the changes did not stop at the movement. The general aesthetic was completely overhauled too, the case for example increased in diameter by 2 mm. What is interesting is that, despite the modifications, updates and remodelling, the Daytona is still unmistakably just that, a Daytona. The present watch is in very crisp condition and although a 'P' series is still powered by the famous Zenith caliber.
