Condition

The movement is in working condition at the time of cataloguing. This very early 5513 is an extremely well preserved example. The dial is exceptional, all lumes have aged to a very rich ivory colour and match each other very well and they all react very nicely under UV light. The exclamation point with some minor loss. There is a very minor loss to the lumes at 5 o'clock. The hour hand has marked the centre of the dial very lightly towards the portion surrounding the depth rating. The hands are oxidized and tarnished. The bezel insert has slightly faded with light wear throughout. The case with some minor polishing, service wear throughout that is consistent with age with the bevel still visible to the edges of the lugs. The numbers between the lugs are very crisp and easy to read. The case back with monogram that reads FR. The case back with minor signs of opening and a very crisp milled edge. The inside of the case back stamped I.62 and with reference number 5512. The bracelet with surface wear throughout that can be seen with the naked eye. This watch is incredibly rare from the first batch of 5513 and is incredibly attractive throughout. Please note that the movement has not been tested for the accuracy of time and may need a service at the buyer's expense. Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement and we do not guarantee the authenticity of any individual component parts since subsequent repairs and restoration work may have resulted in the replacement of original parts. You are advised that watch straps or bands made of materials derived from endangered or otherwise protected species (i.e. alligator or crocodile) are not sold with the watch and we reserve the right to remove these straps or bands prior to shipping. Furthermore, the watch may not come with its original manufacturers strap or band. Prospective bidders should review the Conditions of Business, Authenticity Guarantee, the Guide for Prospective Buyers, and any Important Notice in the sale catalogue.

Catalogue Note

Once considered the less competitive version of the reference 5512, as it does not consist of the wording "Officially Certified Chronometer", the 5513 had undergone approximately 4 years of transition between the period of 1962 to 1966. This transitional period includes the evolution of the gilt dial from having chapter rings to without, gilt dial to matte dial, as well as the configuration of the case. The present dial of the watch fitted with a chapter ring configuration, exclamation mark at 6 o'clock and 2 lines of print for "submariner" and depth rating, is extraordinarily rare especially when it is fitted with a pointy crown guard (PCG) 5513 case from only year 1962 to 1963. Preserved in very appealing and original condition, this reference with all the accompanying attributes is highly collectible today and is extremely rare.
