Description
- inkstand: 8cm. high, 21cm. wide, 10cm. deep; 3¼in., 8¼in., 4in.
with two glass inkwells and Mercury masks to each end together with a set of Italian 'Grand Tour' plaster casts of gems in double-sided beech case, with a printed list of casts (23cm. by 15cm.)
Provenance
Possibly Oswald Smith (1794-1863) and the plasters possibly acquired on his Grand Tour in 1818
or
Arthur Vansittart (1807-1859) when in Italy
or
Arthur Vansittart (1807-1859) when in Italy
Condition
The inkstand exhibits signs of age and use and would benefit from a clean as the metal is tarnished. The inkstand lacks one glass liner. The two that come with the piece have wear. The plaster casts have been in store for a long time and are generally good considering. The box they are in has old marks as to be expected and a few of the casts are detached. Some of the casts have old cracks across and these are visible to the naked eye. Additional images available on request.
