Description

  • Height of soldier 14 1/4  in., 36.2 cm
comprising a straw-glazed figure of a soldier and a crackle-glazed tripod dish, together with a Northern Wei-style painted stone head, wood stand (4)

Provenance

Collection of Charles C. Haffner III (1928-2012).
Gifted to the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, in 1992 (acc. nos 1992.169, 1992.170, 1992.171a-b). 

Condition

The figure of the soldier with significant wear to the glaze and some losses. There has been some consolidation along the mold seams towards the base and the tip of one boot is likely reduced. The tripod dish with extensive surface wear, erosion to the glaze particularly along the rim where there are losses. There is overall craquelure and some discoloration. The feet with glaze gaps where they join the base. The sculpture with repaired and filled breaks to the topknot and back of head, aged surface and added pigment.
