Catalogue Note
Abel de Pujol depicts with simplicity the Bourbiers going about their daily activities, in their typical 1830-1840's middle-class interior. The identity of the models is an open issue since we can see on the wall the famous 1836 painting by Adrienne Marie Louise Grandpierre-Deverzy, future spouse of the painter, showing the studio of the latter (the original is located in the Valenciennes Museum of Fine Arts). As the painting remained in the hands of the artist until her death in 1869, when it was bequeathed to the Valenciennes Museum, the interior could be hers too.
