Catalogue Note
Approximately Accurate Movements is a distinctive example of the ink explorations by Zheng Chongbin, who is an artist constantly pushing the boundaries of spatial perception of two-dimensional objects. While the work presents a composition in a vertical format, the marble-like mixture of ink and acrylic suggests movements in various directions that defies the law of gravity and engages the viewer in an active viewing experience. The introduction of acrylic to the ink medium is Zheng’s attempts to expand the language system of thinking about ink painting, its structure and surface. In addition, Zheng maintains a link to Chinese tradition. "The way that we perceive nature in a free, spatially engaged way," he states, "is the core of the Song painting tradition...Landscapes of the mind is an important concept for Chinese painting that moves beyond just the physical medium itself and into the cosmology of how we, as viewers, engage with the world."
