Description

  • 8.5 cm, 3 3/8  in.
well worked with a compressed globular body rising from a splayed foot with a galleried rim to a prominently flaring neck, the translucent stone of an even white colour

Condition

Some minute nibbling along the rim and foot, with a tiny section of the inner foot lightly polished.

Catalogue Note

The form of the current vessel derives from ceramic spittoon vessels, which started being produced in the Tang dynasty. A larger example from the collection of Sir Quo-Wei Lee, illustrated in Ip Yee, Chinese Jade Carving, Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 222, was sold in these rooms, 8th October 2019, lot 103. Another smaller example was sold in these rooms, 8th October 2014, lot 3738.
