The form of the current vessel derives from ceramic spittoon vessels, which started being produced in the Tang dynasty. A larger example from the collection of Sir Quo-Wei Lee, illustrated in Ip Yee, Chinese Jade Carving, Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 222, was sold in these rooms, 8th October 2019, lot 103.
