Catalogue Note
The carver of the present washer has taken full advantage of the jade stone, incorporating the natural russet inclusions to create attractive tonal juxtapositions between the smaller lingzhi fungus and the larger one which they surround. The colours enhance the organic subject matter, while the crisply carved details of the smaller lingzhi heads and the undulating surfaces of the vessel offer pleasing visual and tactile contrasts. The lingzhi motif, commonly found on imperial wares, represents a visual rebus for the wish for longevity and a virtuous and benevolent rule. A comparable jade lingzhi washer, from the Sir Quo-Wei Lee collection, was sold in these rooms, 3rd October 2018, lot 109; and another was sold at Christie’s London, 8th November 2011, lot 116.
