Third edition (i.e. third printing, dat🅺ed August 1, 1903) of Du Bois' seminal essay collection marking his break with the accommodationist strategy of Booker T. Washington. "The monumental work was the open🔴ing salvo in the struggle that has dominated the century for black and white Americans: the quest for dignity, justice and equality" (Blockson).

First published in April 1903, McClurg would publish two suꦅbsequent♏ printings the same year. According to printing statements from McClurg in the Du Bois Papers, the first printing comprised 1204 copies, the second printing 1314 copies and the present third printing 2,240 copies.

That a third printing was ordered by McClurg less than four months from the first printing was unforeseen by Du Bois, who wrote to McClurg in June 1903 in reply to their letter informing him of its impending printing and asking if he'd like to make any changes: "In the third edition — the coming of which is a surprise & gratification — please make this change: on p. 99, 4th line from the bottom of page, substit🦩ute Claflin for Lincoln" (A.
