Description
A KAZAK RUG, SOUTHWEST CAUCASUS
third quarter 19th century
approximately 214 by 140cm; 7ft., 4ft. 7in.
Rippon Boswell, Wiesbaden, 31 May 2014, lot 77
This generously proportioned Kazak rug reveals some unusual design quirks: rather than a simple grid, the hooked guls are buoyed between free-floating horizontal bars, either side of a zig-zag column which rises from a diamo💟nd filled pedestal. The motifs scintillate against the white ground of both field and border; the weaver appears to have initially planned a dark ground border filled with rosettes, as can be seen at the lower🤪 edge.
