Description
A KULA PICTORIAL NICHE RUG, WEST ANATOLIA
first half 19th century
approximately 131 by 113cm; 4ft. 4in., 3ft. 8in.
Arik, Rüchan, Turkish Landscape Carpets, Hali, Issue I/2, Summer 1978, figs. 13 and 13A, p. 125
In the Turkish Baroque style, this charming Kula rug depicts a mosque at the apex of the arch, beneath a band of inscription; there is a mosque lamp at the 'entrance' to the niche and four walled gardens with fruit and cypress trees and kiosks lie between. For a further discussion of Turkish landscape carpets, please see Hali, op.cit., pp. 123-127.
