Description
A RABAT CARPET, MOROCCO
early 19th century, or earlier
approximately 570 by 195cm; 18ft. 8in., 6ft. 5in.
Early Moroccan carpets are rare. They were probably only produced in relati൩vely small quantities for the houses of the elite, with their long narrow shape reflecting the architecture of these homes. The designs are influenced by Anatolian rugs, the central field extended by lateral panels to increase the ratio of length to width. The design of the present lot references Mudjur prayer rugs, particularly in the field, end panels and inner borders, whilst the yellow ground border is reminiscent of the double hooked cartouches found in the borders of late 17th century 'Transylvanian' rugs.
