Lion's head terminals for armrests and front legs feature prominently in chair designs in George Smith's influential 1808 publication Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. Ornate foliate and scroll carving similar to that on the crest rails also appears in armchair designs published in 1825 by H. Whitaker in Designs of Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture in the Most Modern Style, two of which are illustrated in E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of 19th Century Furniture Design (Woodbridge 1984), pp.156, 184.
