Canine companions occasionally appear in Sandys' work, including a pug puppy in the ironically-titled Kittie (Miss Ellen Ellis) of 1873 (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool), a collie in the portrait of Cyril Flower of 1872 (private collection) and a dachshund in the portrait of his sons Conrad Herbert Flower and Violet Flower of 1885 (private collection).
