A 🌳𓆏gold and enamel snuff box, Anders Liedberg, Stockholm, circa 1763

Very little is known about the Swedish goldsmith Anders Liedberg. Working in Stockholm between 1760 and 1778, several examples of his work are to be found in the collection of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, among them two exquisite scent bottles, one dated 1763 and the other made in 1764 (Svenskt Guld 1600-1850, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, April 1948, p. 21). Another rectangular gold box, also made in 1763, but with flower-chased panels, is illustrated in A. Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, Woodbridge, 1990, pl. 829.
Although not executed in the technique usually associated with the work of Pierre Adolphe Hall, the modelling of the facial contours and the sense of acknowledgement of the viewer’s presence may be compared with the artist’s portrait of an unknown gentlemen in the Nationalmuseu❀m, Stockholm (inv. no. NMB 725).
