Exhibition Review, Hali, Vol. 1, no. 3, 1978, p. 300, fig. 3.

This coupled column prayer rug is an interesting example of the type with unusual border design, the overall stemming from the earlier Ottoman court column rugs. A comparison for the present lot can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, acc. no. 1974.149.18 formerly Joseph V. McMullan collection. Both examples share the deep red field with well-articulated narrow ivory columns, though with differing borders. A rug with comparable borders is published in Christopher Alexander’s book, Alexander. C., A Foreshadowing of 21st Century Art The Color and Geometry of Very Early Turkish Carpets, New York, 1993, pp. 318 & 319.
