This unusual design was most probably inspired by the so-called 'Bizarre silks' which refers to a specific trend in textile design fashionable in Europe between the 1690s and 1720s. Characterised by eclectic motifs with an asymmetrical and fantastical design, these textiles would have originally been inspired by Oriental motifs. One can imagine a local Indian designer coming across such textiles on the dress of a European lady that then influenced examples such as the present lot. &nbsꦿp;
