Arabic manuscript on paper, 8 leaves plus 2 fly-leaves, 10 lines to the page, written in naskh in black ink, ruled in black, gold and red, the outer margins with gold outlined palmettes against a yellow ground, verses separated by gold and pink rosettes, f.1b with gold and pink headings and surah title in gold cursi⛦ve outlined in black, in a brown gilt-stamped binding

The flyleaf bears an attrജibution to Hafiz Osman signed by the court librarian Sabri. Kalkandelenli Sabri Efendi worked for Sultan Abdulhamid II (r.1876-1909) and was appointed director of the Yildiz Palace Library where he worked until 1909.


Hafiz Osman (d.1698) is considered one of the greatest calligraphers of the seventeenth century. Born in Istanbul in 1642, he worked 🌠under the patronage of the Grand Vizier Koprulu-zadeh Mustafa Pasha and was a member of the Sunbuliye order, based in the dervish-lodge in the region of Koca-Mustafa-Pasha in Istanbul. He was the teacher of Sultan Mustafa II (r.1695-1703) and the young Ahmad III (r.1703-30) before he came to power. A panel signed written by him sold ꦛin these rooms, 7 October 2009, lot 56 and more recently on 23 October 2019, lot 45.
